INTRODUCTION TO REAL ESTATE ETHICS

This course fulfills the NAR requirement for new members.  This course covers the NAR Code of Ethics and reviews case studies pertaining to the Code.  Sample scenarios are included as a decision making practice for licensees.

Explain the concepts of ethics, code of ethics, and the Golden Rule; and provide examples of ethical and unethical behavior.

Ethics and law
Differentiate between examples of ethical versus unethical actions and legal versus illegal actions; and describe the impact of the NAR Code of Ethics on the law.

NAR Code of Ethics
Demonstrate a knowledge of the purpose of the NAR Code of Ethics, the concepts presented in the Preamble to the Code, and the enforcement process, including the difference between and ethics complaint and an arbitration process, the functions of the Grievance Committee and the Professional Standards/Arbitration Committee, and possible penalties for violating the Code.

Structure and content of the NAR Code of Ethics -- Articles, Standards of Practice, and Case Interpretations
Categorize actions as ethical or unethical based on an understanding of the Articles of the NAR Code of Ethics, including those Articles that are frequently the subject of complaints and the associated Standards of Practice.

Procuring cause and arbitration
Analyze how procuring cause will be used to decide commission disputes.

Case studies
Evaluate several case studies and determine whether the actions described are examples of ethical behavior or examples of violations of the NAR Code of Ethics.
